JOJO RABBIT

Jojo Rabbit (2019)

Dir: Taika Waititi

one of my favorite movies in 2019 was JOJO RABBIT, A comical and satirical take on the days of WWII and of Nazi Germany and how even 10-11 year old kids were brainwashed & polarised in the name of fanatic racial nationalism and hatred for Jews. Though this is a comedy movie, it takes a sad and emotional turn in the second half but ends up in happy note making you feel good.

this whole film is shown from the perspective of a 10 year old but in a lighter way than other similar films like Boy In The Stripped Pyjamas. Still it managed to present the horrors and absurdity of WWII and Nazism in its own way (however as a film about holocaust and war, it does not tell us many new things).

Jojo Betzler’s character played by Roman Griffin Davis is one of the most memorable things for me, it’s the best thing throughout the movie. the world on screen that we see is entirely his word under the shadows and surroundings of war and Nazism. the relationship between Jojo and his mother(Scarlett Johansson) is a one of love, caring and also mothers fear that his child might become someone he’s not, and Jojo intentionally or not, denouncing her for her opinions and actions against the war.

At last there’s this particular scene is where Jojo realizes the evil of Nazism, something he has always admired despite having a good and innocent heart but now the same idealogy has ruined his country and his family. He kicks out his hero and his imaginary friend Adolf Hitler from his house which actually depicts that he kicks out the love and admirations for Nazism that he had inside him, from his mind and soul. This is a spoiler but couldn’t help posting it as it’s the best scene from the movie.
